Penn State Center Pittsburgh Cordially invites you to
A discussion on US – Cuba relations Post 2016 Presidential Elections

On Friday, November 11th from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, the Penn State Center Pittsburgh will host two influential Cuban citizens, who represent the Instituto Cubano de Amsted con los Pueblos (ICAP) (Cuban Institute of Friendship with the People).  Cuba is undergoing major changes in a process that includes an evolving relationship with the United States.   Cuba’s young people are helping to drive that process.

Sandra Ramirez is the ICAP Director of Canada, and Leima Martinez is with the North American Division of ICAP. They are both specialists in civil society and community organization. They will be the featured speakers at the National Network on Cuba Convention/Meeting in Chicago the following week.   There, people concerned with Cuba policy will converge to evaluate US – Cuba policy in light of a new US presidential administration.

This event will take place in the context of the US Presidential election, with radical differences in how US – Cuba policy could be impacted, and whether gains made towards normalization of relations with Cuba will stagnate, move forward, or be reversed.

ICAP was founded in 1960 as a non-governmental NGO ‘people-to-people’ organization to help reach out to the international community and be the voice of the Cuban people.  During these early days, Cuba was being ‘demonized’ by the Cold War and anti-Communist rhetoric.  This effort was to represent, and communicate to the international community, the aspirations of Cuban society after the revolution.  The effort was not designed to defend the revolution but to represent how Cuba was reimagining civil society.  This reimage was based on the principles that inspired the revolution against post-colonial and imperial influences on their country.

These two representatives are stopping in Pittsburgh to share their perspectives on US – Cuba relations.  Please come to learn about Cuban society, changing US – Cuba policies, and potential changes in normalization efforts.  There will be significant opportunity for open exploratory discussion.
